Norris Takes Brazil Pole Amid Heavy Rain and Grid Penalties
Reported by Tanvi Pillai (Section Editor) · BBC Sport ·
McLaren driver Lando Norris secured pole position for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after navigating some of the wettest driving conditions of his career. The qualifying session required a delay of nearly an hour and a half because track conditions were too dangerous to start. Mercedes driver George Russell posted the second-fastest time behind Norris. However, Russell will start seventh on the grid due to a five-place grid penalty. Russell stated that visibility dropped to zero down the straight into Turn Four during the challenging first qualifying session, noting he experienced wheel-spin in fifth gear at speeds over 200km/h. Several front-runners faced grid penalties, creating an unusual starting lineup. Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson and Audi driver Nico Hulkenberg secured the second row. Haas driver Oliver Bearman starts sixth, while Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso and Williams driver Alex Albon reached the top 10 for the first time in 2026, taking eighth and ninth places respectively. Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen start 20th and 21st after exceeding their annual engine limits. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc also received a 10-place penalty for engine usage after qualifying fourth. Norris admitted that wet weather helped him secure pole because McLaren lacked dry-pace speed compared to Mercedes. He added that he hopes for more rain during Sunday's race. Russell expressed frustration over a team miscommunication that he felt cost him a shot at pole position, though team boss Toto Wolff reminded him of his second-place qualifying result.
Context
Qualifying sessions in Formula 1 determine the starting order for the main Grand Prix race based on drivers' fastest lap times. Extreme weather events like heavy rain frequently disrupt race schedules and force extended delays to ensure driver safety on the track. Grid penalties are standard rules applied when teams replace car parts beyond the permitted yearly limit.
