Production Costs

Artificial intelligence is already cutting expenses for commercial projects, but token fees and repeated revisions could make full feature films more expensive than during the 35mm celluloid era. Kim Kwang-jib, founder and CEO of Studio Meta-K, told the Taiwan Creative Content Fest in Taipei that token bills for a 100-minute film can reach 500 million KRW, which equals 366,000 US dollars, using top commercial tools. If AI companies raise these token prices tenfold, costs could surge to 5 billion KRW, or 3.66 million US dollars, surpassing traditional regional budgets.

Revisions and Workflow

While digital cameras let crews shoot freely without extra expenses, AI systems charge for every single re-render pass. Studio Meta-K can bundle ten client changes together and pay for just one extra pass, but receiving those same ten edits across ten separate days forces ten separate re-renders and charges. Lee Sang-wook, head of the AI Content Lab at MBC C&I, noted that rapid tool updates add further financial pressure, requiring continuous adaptation since tools shift weekly and a project like their 139-minute feature Raphael took over a year to make.

Context

Generative AI tools are transforming media production workflows across the global entertainment industry by automating labor-intensive tasks like background generation and visual effects. However, studios face heavy financial and technical hurdles, including unpredictable software subscription models, strict quality specifications from streaming platforms, and complex legal questions regarding data transparency. Industry leaders emphasize that while technology alters production methods, fundamental filmmaking skills and human creative direction remain essential.
