Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’ to hit Amazon Prime Video on Nov 12 after smashing ₹820 crore box‑office record

Jailer 2 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 12 November, just eight weeks after its theatrical run, according to the film’s producers. The Rajinikanth starrer earned more than ₹820 crore, making it the highest‑grossing Tamil movie ever and the biggest commercial hit for Sun Pictures. Director Nelsan and the production house highlighted the rapid OTT launch as a surprise for fans who expected a longer theatrical window. The film also features actor Sivarajkumar’s wife in a key role, adding a fresh face to the ensemble. Actress Regina Cassandra, who debuted as a lead in Tamil cinema in 2005, continues her two‑decade presence in South Indian films, though she does not appear in this sequel. Alongside Jailer 2, the Diwali slate includes Surya’s action drama Seen and Nayanthara’s comedy Mookuthi Amma 2, both released on the festival day. Traditionally, veteran filmmaker K. Balachander avoids Diwali releases, citing the festive mood’s impact on audiences, while the Tamil Nadu government has recently lifted a three‑year ban on early‑morning special screenings in theatres. ## Context The record‑breaking run of Jailer 2 reflects the growing trend of blockbuster Tamil films securing massive box‑office returns before moving quickly to streaming platforms, a shift that shortens the conventional theatrical‑to‑OTT gap.
