King Charles III led senior members of the Royal Family at the annual Festival of Remembrance at London's Royal Albert Hall. The Prince of Wales, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Queen Camilla joined the King to honor service personnel who lost their lives, on the eve of Remembrance Sunday. The audience stood as a fanfare played for the royal entry, which included bereaved families and serving personnel.

Memorial Events

The King will lead two minutes of silence on Sunday to remember those who died in the two world wars and other conflicts. He will join other senior royals and political leaders at the Cenotaph in central London to lay wreaths. Ten thousand veterans will join the Royal British Legion march-past to represent more than 300 armed forces and civilian groups.

Attendees And Performances

Catherine wore an Irish Guards regimental brooch, earrings from the late Queen Elizabeth II, and a handmade poppy. The King became patron of the Royal British Legion in 2024. Clive Myrie hosted the festival, which featured performances by Alfie Boe and Mica Paris, along with armed forces bands like the Band of Royal Air Force Regiment. The Chelsea Pensioners, Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also attended.

Conflict Anniversaries

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the end of the First Gulf War and 15 years since the end of British military operations in Iraq under Operation Telic. Veterans shared their personal stories from these conflicts during the event. Events will take place across the country for Remembrance Sunday, which falls near Armistice Day on 11 November, marking the end of World War One in 1918.

Context

Remembrance Sunday is an annual tradition observed in many nations to honor military members who died in war. The poppy serves as a well-known symbol of remembrance, inspired by the red flowers that grew on battlefields. Events like the festival and the Cenotaph ceremony help communities remember the human cost of military conflict.
