Indian stock markets recorded a strong surge on Friday, with both the Sensex and Nifty closing higher for the seventh consecutive trading session despite sharp declines in global markets.
Market Gains And Investor Wealth
The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 1,718.01 points, or 2.17 percent, to close above 81,000 at 81,028.02. The 50-share NSE Nifty gained 493.75 points, or 2.01 percent, to cross the 25,000 mark at 25,030.35, reaching its highest closing level in nine months and surpassing the level for the first time since February 27, 2026. Over the past seven sessions, the Sensex has risen by a total of 7,781.99 points or 10.62 percent, while the Nifty climbed 2,331.5 points or 10.27 percent. Bank Nifty also advanced 1,312.35 points to close at 59,086. This continuous rally pushed the total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies up by about 1.49 lakh crore rupees on Friday to reach 503.10 lakh crore rupees, adding nearly 30.41 lakh crore rupees in investor wealth over seven sessions.
Drivers And Top Gainers
Mahindra and Mahindra led the Sensex gainers with a 6.15 percent jump after reporting a 25 percent increase in consolidated profit after tax to 4,587.88 crore rupees for the July-September quarter, supported by strong auto sales and revenue growth. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Titan, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank also traded higher, while Power Grid was the only Sensex company to close in the red. Foreign institutional investors made a net purchase of 14,974.68 crore rupees in Indian shares on Thursday, remaining net buyers for the fifth straight session, while domestic institutional investors net sold 10,444 crore rupees worth of shares. Meanwhile, Brent crude fell 1.50 percent to 96.82 dollars per barrel.
Global Markets And Precious Metals
The domestic rally contrasted with heavy selling across major global equities. US markets slumped on Thursday with the Nasdaq Composite falling 5.52 percent, S&P 500 down 4.36 percent, and Dow Jones sliding 3.44 percent. Asian indices also faced pressure as South Korea's Kospi dropped 6.02 percent and Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 5.96 percent. Geojit Investments head of research Vinod Nair noted that investors are viewing Indian equities as a safer alternative amid global volatility driven by US tech sell-offs and tech regulation fears. Additionally, coinciding with the Dhanteras festival, precious metal prices dropped, with December delivery gold on the Multi Commodity Exchange falling by about 1,900 rupees to 1,42,150 rupees per 10 grams and silver dropping about 2,900 rupees to 1,84,210 rupees per kilogram, while international Comex gold declined 1.31 percent to 4,059.90 dollars per ounce and silver fell 1.41 percent to 51.640 dollars per ounce.
Context
Strong domestic corporate earnings and steady foreign institutional fund inflows can help insulate local equity markets during periods of broader international economic uncertainty. Major festival periods traditionally see shifts in retail consumer spending patterns across bullion and financial assets in India. Stock index movements reflect daily changes in aggregate corporate valuations driven by institutional trading volumes.
