Authorities in Taiwan have detained Lin Te-wang, the chairman of the Taiwan People's Communist Party, over allegations that he ran for borough chief under the direct sponsorship and direction of China's Communist Party.

The Charges

According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, prosecutors stated that an initial investigation showed Mr. Lin also directed another party member to run as a candidate for chief in a different borough. Prosecutors alleged that Mr. Lin tried to buy votes by repeatedly taking voters to mainland China, where they received free hospitality.

Legal Action

Authorities summoned 14 people and nine witnesses after receiving intelligence about foreign election meddling. Government lawyers applied to detain Mr. Lin and the other party member out of fear they might flee or destroy evidence. Courts ordered Mr. Lin detained and barred from visits, while releasing the other member on a 50,000-Taiwan-dollar bail, which equals about $1,525. Mr. Lin was previously found not guilty in 2025 on charges of Chinese infiltration and trying to influence elections.

Context

Taiwan is preparing for local elections on November 28, which are seen as a test for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party led by President Lai Ching-te. Beijing claims self-governing Taiwan as its territory, and allegations of Chinese interference frequently surface during Taiwanese elections.
