Taking calcium, iron, and vitamin D supplements at the wrong times can stop your body from absorbing them properly. Calcium can block the absorption of iron when people take them together, especially in supplement form.

Timing And Diet

Dietitian Deepa Mishra from Narayana RN Tagore Hospital in Kolkata explains that calcium stops the body from absorbing non-haem iron. This is the type of iron found in plant foods and supplements because both minerals use the same pathways in the gut. When high amounts of both are present together, they fight for absorption and reduce how much the body takes in. This issue matters most for pregnant women, vegetarians, and people who lack iron. Experts recommend waiting at least two hours between taking iron and calcium supplements. On the other hand, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and keeps bones and teeth healthy, which is why doctors often prescribe calcium and vitamin D together. Unlike calcium, vitamin D does not fight directly with iron. Iron is best taken on an empty stomach, while vitamin D works best when taken with a meal that contains fat. People should also avoid taking iron with coffee, tea, or dairy products because they reduce absorption, while vitamin C or citrus juice can help.

Context

Many people take multiple daily supplements to make up for gaps in their regular diet without realizing that certain nutrients interact with each other inside the body. Simple adjustments to the daily schedule, such as taking iron in the morning and calcium later in the day with meals, help ensure the body gets the full benefit of each nutrient.
