Market Opening
Diwali firecracker sales at Chennai Island Grounds will start on November 3 and run through November 10. The opening was delayed this year because of a court case. The High Court then gave permission to set up 30 shops at the site.
Shop Setup And Prices
The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation held a tender for these spots. Workers are now busy setting up the shops at the grounds. Prices for firecrackers have gone up by 10 to 15 percent this year.
Production Issues
Shaikh Abdullah, who is the working president of the Chennai Firecracker Merchants Association, explained the situation. He said production dropped because many factory units in Sivakasi shut down. This led to lower supplies coming into the market. He also noted that very few new types of firecrackers are available this year.
Buyer Advice
Buyers are advised to come early to get the items they want. They should buy their stocks in advance instead of waiting until the final day, as popular varieties might run out quickly.
Context
Temporary firecracker markets like this one are set up ahead of major festivals in public spaces to handle heavy festive demand. Sivakasi remains the main manufacturing hub for fireworks in the country, meaning any shift in its production levels directly impacts supplies in cities like Chennai.
