Four people died and 88 others sustained injuries after two passenger trains collided south of the Egyptian capital on Sunday. The accident took place in the Al-Ayyat area of Giza and caused several carriages to derail.

Details of the Crash

Egypt's railway authority stated that a train moving from Giza to Fayoum hit the back of another service travelling south from Cairo to Aswan. The Health Ministry reported that 88 injured passengers are receiving treatment in various hospitals around the Giza area, while state-owned media initially put the number of wounded at 120 people. Emergency teams deployed cranes to clear the wreckage from the tracks.

Official Response

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stated that he is monitoring the situation with great concern. He ordered authorities to carry out an urgent investigation and ensure that anyone found to be negligent faces accountability.

Context

The crash happened in Giza's Al-Ayyat area, which was previously the site of Egypt's worst-ever rail disaster when a fire killed more than 370 people in 2002. Egypt's extensive railway network serves a population of 110 million people, but it has a history of deadly accidents. While the government has spent billions of dollars on new transport infrastructure over the past decade, much of the older rail system still requires a full upgrade.
