McLaren talks, 'numb' cars and being 'captain of the ship' - Verstappen Q&A

Max Verstappen has had five podiums so far in 2026 but is yet to win a race. The Dutchman is in a no-nonsense mood, even more so than usual, as he discusses his 2026 season in an exclusive interview with BBC Sport on the eve of the Italian Grand Prix. Verstappen signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull, which runs to the end of 2030, but has performance clauses, meaning his earnings could be affected if the team struggles for competitiveness next year. The four-time world champion is earning a bit more money due to the contract, but his team is still struggling for performance, with Verstappen admitting that the car is not where he wants it to be feeling-wise. The through-corner balance is too hit or miss, and Verstappen believes that changes need to happen to the car for next year. He is not in a title fight and is trying to just learn and understand as much as possible to do better next year. Verstappen has a problem with the new Formula 1 engine rules and had a stunning appearance at the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May.
