Nearly 49% Indian students eye overseas education for better jobs: Report

Nearly 49% of Indian students are considering overseas education for better job prospects, according to the Transnational Education (TNE) Report 2026 by skilling and workforce development company upGrad. The report found that 65.8% of aspirants are fresh graduates, with 60% coming from tier II and III cities. Students are prioritizing future employability, career outcomes, and affordability, with 7 out of 10 planning to pursue overseas education on a budget of under Rs 30 lakh. The report also reveals a growing interest in European destinations due to rigid immigration policies and rising costs. Traditional destinations like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia remain significant, while Germany, Finland, Spain, and France are gaining popularity due to affordability, industry alignment, and stronger employment-linked pathways. According to Praneet Singh, Vice President, University Partnerships, upGrad Study Abroad, 'The study abroad landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with Indian students increasingly prioritising future employability, career outcomes and affordability.' The report is based on insights from 53,800 counselled aspirants between January 2025 and June 2026.
