Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) have announced talks of a partnership with JSW Group in the form of a memorandum of understanding. Skoda India has been open to partnering with a local entity for some time to increase profitability and further localisation support with their upcoming products. SAVWIPL has been looking for local partners in India to strengthen its foothold in the Indian automotive market, where it faces challenges such as cost and R&D. The partnership aims to enhance manufacturing and research and development in India, with JSW Group looking to gain a majority stake in the SAVWIPL group. SAVWIPL has achieved a 36 percent increase in volume year-on-year in 2025, demonstrating promise of commitment and acceptance of their products on Indian roads. The partnership is non-binding, but could lead to a potential joint venture. JSW Group has previously been involved in the automotive industry through its partnership with MG Motor India. The new partnership could also open up new drivetrain possibilities such as hybrid and EV under Skoda and Volkswagen brands. In the past, SAVWIPL has explored partnerships with local entities, including a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Tata in 2017. This partnership could help SAVWIPL to localise its products at better costs and gain better local knowledge.
