Google picks Finland for its largest single investment in Europe
Reported by Deepak Mishra (Copy Editor) · BBC News - World ·
Google will invest €13bn in Finland's AI infrastructure, its largest single investment in Europe, in a bid to power growing demand for AI services. The US tech giant will buy up to 50% of the electricity produced by the Loviisa nuclear power plant, under a 22-year contract with Finnish utility Fortum. This deal is expected to support over 37,000 jobs during construction and boost Finland's GDP by €3.6bn annually. The investment will also fund three new data centres, expand an existing site, and support clean energy projects. Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo hailed the decision as a testament to the country's strengths, while Google's President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat noted the investment as a deepening of the company's roots in Finland. The infrastructure will support products such as Google's AI chatbot Gemini, alongside services including Search, Maps, and YouTube. Google has also pledged to support local biodiversity, education, research, and workforce development through dedicated nature and community funds.
