What Happened

Strong demand for the U.S. Treasury’s 30‑year bond auction pushed the benchmark yield down six basis points to 5.61%, its lowest level since 2002. The Treasury sold $22 billion of the longest‑dated debt on Thursday and saw primary dealers take only 6.8% of the issue, well below the typical 10% share, indicating broad investor appetite. The same week’s 10‑year auction also attracted solid bids, reinforcing the trend.

Reaction

President Donald Trump posted on social media that he would hold off any new strike on Iran until after the November 3 midterm elections, easing near‑term geopolitical tension. Oil prices fell from around $105 a barrel, removing some of the “Iran escalation tail risk” that had pushed long‑dated yields higher in recent weeks, said Izaac Brook, US rates strategist at RBC Capital Markets. Molly Brooks, rates strategist at TD Securities, called the steady demand a “good sign for those that want to dip their toes back in the long end” and added that a few days of rally could bring more cautious buyers back. Short‑end yields also retreated, with the two‑year rate slipping to 4.75% as traders price roughly a 20% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike later this month and fully price in a move by year‑end. The Treasury followed the auction with a $6 billion buyback of bonds maturing in 20‑30 years, the fourth such operation since the program’s expansion.

Context

Yield levels move opposite to bond prices; when yields fall, bond prices rise, making Treasuries more attractive to investors seeking safe returns. Long‑dated Treasury yields have hovered near multi‑decade highs, so any pull‑back tends to draw additional buying interest.
