EntertainmentFolk-horror movie Bokshi delayed to December after censor board review over witchcraft and violence

The theatrical debut of the folk-horror film Bokshi has been moved from October 9 to December 4, 2026, following a review by the Central Board of Film Certification. The censor board's initial examining committee sent the project to a revising committee due to its dark themes, portrayal of witchcraft, and heavy bloodshed.

Certification And Delay

The revising committee has now approved the movie with an 'A' rating after asking for only minor changes. Production banner Lorien Motion Pictures announced the new date on October 8, stating that the schedule change gives the team enough time to plan a proper nationwide marketing campaign.

Cast And Story

Directed by Bhargav Saikia and written by Harsh Vaibhav, the movie features actors Prasanna Bisht, Mansi Multani, and Siddharth Shaw. Shernaz Patel provides the voice for the main character, named Bokshi. The plot follows a troubled young student named Anahita on an educational excursion to a historic location that connects her to an old myth.

Languages And Festivals

The project includes dialogue in Hindi, English, and Nepali, plus a custom fictional dialect called Boksirit created by linguist Jan van Steenbergen. The film first premiered at the Rotterdam film festival in 2025 and traveled to other global events like Sitges, Neuchâtel, and SXSW Sydney.

Context

Film certification bodies in India review movies before public release to decide appropriate age ratings and ensure content aligns with guidelines. Censor boards occasionally require second reviews by special committees when a project contains intense themes or violence before granting a clearance certificate.
