CME cattle futures fell for a second day on Thursday as traders booked profits after sharp early‑week gains and wholesale beef prices slipped. The decline came amid a technical‑selling retreat following the recent rally. An uptick in imported cattle supplies from Mexico pressured the feeder cattle market, though overall consumer demand for beef stays strong. December live cattle settled 0.225 cent lower at 223.550 cents per pound after hitting a three‑week high on Tuesday. November feeder cattle, which had risen to the highest level since mid‑July, ended down 0.925 cent at 334.875 cents per pound. Cash market activity at Plains feedlots was sluggish, and limited packer bids suggest the next sales wave could come at lower prices, analysts said. "In the absence of positive news out of the cash market, I think that there's just some profit‑taking going on," said Doug Houghton, analyst at Brock Capital Management. He added that beef prices have begun to weaken again after last week's strength and the sharp run‑up on Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture quoted the choice boxed beef cutout at $374.87 per hundredweight on Thursday, down 75 cents from the previous day, while select cuts fell $2.12 to $352.09 per cwt. Beef packer margins narrowed to $83.75 per head on Thursday, down from $126.45 a week earlier, according to HedgersEdge. Lean hog futures also fell, pressured by weak cash hog and pork prices; the most‑active December hog contract settled 0.500 cent lower at 68.600 cents per pound, touching near‑contract lows.
Context
Cattle futures track market expectations for beef prices, so profit‑taking often follows rapid price moves. Higher Mexican cattle imports can boost supply and push prices down, while tighter packer margins signal tighter profit conditions for meat processors.
