Veteran actor Nana Patekar passed away on Thursday at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his Goa home. Known for his straightforward views both on and off screen, he spoke openly about religion, caste and humanity throughout his life.

Views On Society

In 2016, at a school event in Maharashtra, Nana questioned the need to identify people by religion or caste and asked why official forms still included columns for them if India is a secular country. During an appearance on Aap Ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma, he stated that he had never followed any particular religion or sect and saw himself only as a human being. Beyond social identity, his concerns included inequality and rural distress.

Social Work And Film Career

His deep concern over drought and farmer suicides in Vidarbha led him to form the Naam Foundation with actor Makarand Anaspure to help people affected by rural distress. Nana began his career in theatre and made his film debut in the 1978 movie Gaman. Over a decades-long career in Hindi and Marathi cinema, he won three National Film Awards for Parinda, Krantiveer and Agni Sakshi, and received the Padma Shri in 2013.

Context

Nana Patekar left a lasting mark on Indian cinema through both his intense acting performances and his active social work for distressed farmers. Artists and public figures often use their platform to address social inequalities and support grassroots welfare initiatives in rural areas.
