Daily electricity demand in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 290 million units from 265 million units, according to Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar.
Infrastructure Development
The Minister made this announcement while inaugurating a 132/33 kV AP-Transco substation at Kothapatnam in the Ongole Assembly constituency on Thursday. The new facility was built at a cost of 44.25 crore rupees, alongside local MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao. AP-Transco is investing around 6,000 crore rupees overall to build substations across the State, including 11 completed and seven ongoing projects in Prakasam district alone.
Power Supply And Political Allegations
To manage the surge in demand, the State is increasing power generation through AP-Genco and buying extra electricity from other sources to keep supply steady. Minister Ravi Kumar also criticized the previous YSRCP administration from 2019 to 2024, alleging that they neglected the power sector by failing to build substations even when funds and land were ready. During the same visit, the Minister opened a Skill Development Centre and a Centre of Excellence for electric vehicles and drone technology, and reviewed preparations for Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's public meeting on Friday.
Context
Rising power demand is a common challenge for fast-growing regions as urbanization and industrial activity expand. State electricity boards regularly upgrade transmission infrastructure like substations and lines to prevent outages and handle peak loads efficiently.
