The 21st FICCI Higher Education Summit began on Thursday at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi with a focus on reform, resilience, and relevance. Speaking at the two-day event, BJP veteran and former HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi stated that the Indian education system aims to balance material, intellectual, and spiritual growth. Joshi also released a report titled "From AI Adoption to Readiness – Preparing Indian Higher Education for the AI-era" during the gathering.
Student Protests and AI
Addressing student protests on the sidelines of the summit, Joshi said that valid student demands should be handled with sympathy rather than batons. Other leaders at the event also discussed technological shifts. Symbiosis University Chancellor Vidya Yeravdekar noted that higher education institutes must prepare students for an AI-driven world. FICCI Secretary General Anant Swarup added that artificial intelligence is altering knowledge requirements faster than syllabus committees can adapt. Meanwhile, Padmakumar Nair, Vice Chancellor of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, urged universities to combine compassion with an uncompromising pursuit of excellence.
