Votes are being counted today for the Tattanchavadi assembly by-election in Puducherry, where 11 candidates contested, including Ashok Anand from N.R. Congress, Vinayagamoorthy from Congress, Sethu Selvam from DMK, Salim from the Communist Party of India, and Karthi Kumari from Naam Tamilar Katchi.

Voting Details

A total of 21,756 voters cast their ballots during the voting held on the 6th, which included 10,056 male voters, 11,695 female voters, and 5 third-gender voters. Voter turnout reached 80.81 percent for this by-election, showing a drop of 6.29 percent compared to the 87.10 percent recorded during the general assembly election last April.

Counting Process

Postal ballots are being counted first, followed by electronic voting machines across four rounds. The first three rounds cover eight polling booths each, while the final round covers seven booths. Strong police security is in place at the Motilal Nehru Polytechnic College in Laspet.

Context

Vote counting for elections in India follows a strict, phased procedure starting with postal votes before opening electronic voting machines. Results for smaller constituency by-elections are usually declared within a few hours once the rounds of counting are completed.
