Washington has placed financial restrictions on two companies based in Mumbai along with five Indian citizens due to their alleged involvement in moving Iranian oil products. The move involves SSPL Solutions Private Limited and Samudra Marine Services Private Limited, both accused of helping bring Iranian petroleum items into other markets. Two people linked to SSPL Solutions, named Dhwani and Nisarg Vora, face blockades alongside three people connected to Samudra Marine Services: Ketan Kochikar, Bhupendrasingh Sahu, and Harishyam Hariharan Chundakattil. These individuals are barred from carrying out any financial deals tied to their respective companies. This enforcement step forms part of a wider U.S. pressure campaign against Tehran called Operation Economic Outcast. The U.S. State Department stated that the affected groups directed millions of dollars to the Iranian government, helping fund its operations. Along with the State Department measures, the U.S. Treasury Department penalized 17 more entities and their hidden fleet ships to cut off Tehran from funding. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the U.S. will keep exposing anyone who assists in selling Iranian oil.
Context
Governments often use financial penalties to block trade networks that support foreign adversaries. A wind-down period allows companies a brief window to wrap up existing business before strict rules take full effect.
