The main opposition party BJD has caused confusion in political circles by rapidly reversing its stand on a state shutdown. Senior party leaders held a meeting at Naveen Niwas in Bhubaneswar under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik. Following this, BJD chief whip Pramila Mallik told reporters that the party would support the opposition INDIA bloc's call for an Odisha shutdown on Thursday. She also noted that BJD Rajya Sabha MPs had participated in the bloc's rally and protest in Delhi. However, within half an hour, journalists were called back to her official residence where she clarified that the party is not supporting the shutdown. She stated that BJD remains committed to maintaining equal distance from both the BJP and the Congress. According to HMTV, the shutdown call given by the INDIA bloc saw a partial impact in Paralakhemundi town, where leaders and workers staged picketing and protested in front of government offices, schools, colleges, and banks. Employees were unable to attend government offices due to the picketing, and bus transport came to a complete halt, though two-wheelers and small vehicles operated normally. Leaders from various allied parties including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), and All India Forward Bloc participated in the protests. District Congress President Shankar Pradhan, state secretary Jasmine Sheikh, and several other local party figures took part in the demonstrations across the town.

Context

Political parties often face strategic dilemmas when deciding whether to join protests called by rival coalitions, balancing local political alignment against long-term neutrality goals. Rapid shifts in public announcements highlight the intense pressure political groups navigate during statewide agitations and opposition rallies.
