Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on 9 October that Starlink, Reliance Jio and OneWeb are cleared to launch satellite communication services in India. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi, Scindia stated that users will have the freedom to pick their preferred provider in an open market. The government plans to treat all technologies equally rather than backing any single system.
Market Rules And Security
The administration will block single-company control by giving entry permits to every qualified applicant who wants to work as a satellite operator. Amazon's Project Kuiper still needs to finish getting its required operational permits, while officials are currently working out the exact revenue fees for these providers. Holding a permit does not automatically allow a company to start commercial work right away. Every single firm must clear specific security checks and hit mandatory milestones before launching services.
Context
Satellite internet uses signals bounced from space to bring web access to places that standard cable and mobile towers cannot easily reach. India currently operates the second-largest telecom market globally alongside a growing domestic chip-making sector.
