UPDATE - follow-up to Pneumonic plague outbreak in Russia? What we know so far: Russian authorities have ended quarantine measures after the death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker in Siberia triggered global concern over a potential pneumonic plague outbreak. Darya Shipilova died on October 2 at a hospital in Shelekhov after falling ill in undisclosed circumstances while employed at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute.

Official Response And WHO

Russian health regulator Rospotrebnadzor stated on October 7 that it was winding down precautions after concluding there was no epidemic risk. Officials reported that nearly 5,000 lab tests failed to detect dangerous pathogens, and 90% of quarantined people have been released with no plague cases found among contacts. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged caution regarding media reports of a second sick person. The World Health Organization stated it does not know the exact cause of death and urged Russia to provide more information, noting it could not complete a full risk assessment due to a lack of data.

International Reaction

United States President Donald Trump stated on October 8 that the death did not appear linked to a biological weapon and offered U.S. help, while noting Russia shared little information. The European Union also called on Russia to share transparent reporting about the incident.

Context

Pneumonic plague is a severe, fast-moving lung infection caused by the same bacteria as bubonic plague and can spread through respiratory particles. The disease occurs naturally in wild animals in regions like Irkutsk, where specialized research institutes study such pathogens.
