Jawaharlal Nehru University has dismissed a professor following an internal committee inquiry into sexual harassment allegations filed by at least 11 students.
Action Taken
The university took the decision under University Grants Commission service rules and Central Civil Services rules. Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit signed the order, which dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from the Centre for the Studies of Social Systems with immediate effect. Sources stated that the committee report was presented to the university Executive Council at its September 30 meeting.
Complaints and Probe
At least 11 women students filed complaints against the professor in May, accusing him of misconduct during viva examinations in the first week of that month. One student shared her experience in a WhatsApp group, after which others came forward with similar accusations. According to sources, the professor allegedly offered extra marks in exchange for sexual advances.
Reactions
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad JNU unit stated that the action is an important step toward ensuring justice and accountability on campus. The student group had raised the issue previously and staged a protest seeking the professor's suspension and dismissal. The professor has not responded to requests for comment on the decision.
Context
Internal complaints committees are mandatory bodies in Indian higher education institutions to investigate workplace and campus harassment claims. Universities follow specific service rules and due process before imposing major penalties like dismissal based on committee findings.
