What Happened
Airtel Money, the fintech arm of Bharti Airtel, debuted on the London Stock Exchange on Friday with an offer price of £1.96 per share. The offering valued the company at about £5.3 billion and raised roughly £529 million ($700 million) through an offer‑for‑sale of 270 million shares. Conditional trading began at the offer price, the shares briefly touched £2.00 before easing to around £1.94. Unconditional trading is set to start on 14 October 2026.
Reaction
Sunil Mittal, founder of Airtel and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, said the listing shows confidence in the UK as a stable investment destination. Existing shareholders such as Qatar Investment Authority, TPG Inc., Airtel Africa Plc and Mastercard Inc. participated, and the major shareholders may sell an extra 27 million shares via an overallotment option. The IPO was launched despite a volatile market where many issuers in Europe and the US have delayed offerings because of rising rates and geopolitical tension.
Context
Airtel Money operates in 13 sub‑Saharan African countries and serves about 53 million monthly active users. The company processed $213 billion in transactions in the year to June 2026, roughly one‑tenth of the region’s GDP. The listing gives the firm access to capital while highlighting investor appetite for African fintech even in uncertain market conditions.
