How TV Cameras Uncovered the 2018 Sandpaper Cricket Cheating Scandal

The notorious Sandpapergate ball-tampering scandal in 2018 was caught entirely by pure luck and quick work by live television camera operators during a Test match in Cape Town. Alvin Naicker, the live broadcast director for SuperSport, revealed that a series of coincidences exposed the Australian team. The leadership group of the team planned the cheating scheme during the lunch break on the third day of the third Test match. In the 43rd series over, opening batsman Cameron Bancroft was spotted rubbing the ball on his palm and placing an object into his pocket. A camera operator using a large zoom lens focused on the player, and the slow-motion replay operator spooled the footage back to reveal a yellow spot.

Broadcaster Reaction

The compromising replay was broadcast on the stadium's big screen between deliveries by an independent operator, causing Bancroft to panic and hide the yellow sandpaper inside his trousers. SuperSport captured this moment on tape as well. On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Nigel Llong questioned Bancroft, who emptied his pockets to show only a sunglasses bag while the ball remained unchanged. Australia coach Darren Lehmann used a walkie-talkie to send 12th man Peter Handscomb onto the field to speak with players as the umpires intervened. Naicker stated his crew did not hesitate to broadcast the footage despite the massive scale of the unfolding controversy.

Context

Live sports broadcasting relies on a large team of camera operators and directors who tell visual stories during the inevitable dead time in cricket matches. This specific incident remains one of the biggest cheating scandals in the history of Test cricket.
