Doctor says black bras and sleeping in them don’t cause breast cancer, but early signs matter

Doctor Rohan Khandelwal, a breast‑cancer surgeon and director of The Breast Centre at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, says that neither the colour of a bra nor wearing one while sleeping increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. He explained that breast cancer starts when abnormal cells in breast tissue grow unchecked, and everyday clothing or sleep positions have not been proven to trigger that process. The surgeon also dismissed the claim that tight or under‑wired bras trap toxins by blocking lymphatic drainage, noting that research does not support any link between bra use and cancer. While a poorly fitting bra can cause skin irritation, pressure marks or discomfort, these issues are unrelated to cancer development. Whether a woman chooses to remove a bra before bed is a matter of comfort; a soft, well‑fitting bra may ease breast tenderness for some, but it does not affect cancer risk. Khandelwal stressed that spotting unusual breast changes is far more important than worrying about attire. Most breast lumps are benign, but they cannot be distinguished by touch alone, so any new or odd change should be examined by a doctor even if painless. Depending on the clinical assessment, doctors may order an ultrasound, a mammogram or a biopsy to rule out malignancy. Early detection through self‑examination and timely medical review remains the key to better outcomes.
Context
October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when myths often surface alongside efforts to promote regular self‑checks and screening. Understanding that clothing habits do not cause cancer helps focus attention on real warning signs and encourages women to seek professional evaluation promptly.
