Store Operations
Australian retail chain David Jones keeps all its stores in Australia and New Zealand fully operational after going into receivership and voluntary administration last week. The move follows speculation over a breakdown in rent negotiations with its landlords. The brand's only New Zealand store is located in Newmarket, Auckland.
Sales and Stock Updates
Receivers FTI Consulting report that foot traffic and sales both in-store and online have reached record levels since their appointment. Following this strong trading, orders are now being placed for new stock with suppliers who have confirmed trading agreements. The receivers acknowledge that a few brand partners have withdrawn from some stores, but they insist overall engagement with trade partners remains positive.
Future Plans
In-store and online promotional activities will continue to be reviewed in the coming weeks, particularly as the business heads toward Black Friday. David Jones chief executive Erica Berchtold stated last week that the company has a well-developed plan to reset the business and will work alongside administrators, receivers, and its secured lender to carry it out.
Context
Large retail chains entering voluntary administration often work with appointed receivers to manage their debts, stabilize operations, and negotiate with landlords or suppliers while keeping doors open for business. Retailers frequently ramp up stock replenishment and promotional planning ahead of major shopping events like Black Friday to maintain cash flow.
