Newly elected members of the United States House of Representatives arrived in Washington on Sunday for orientation following a midterm election that gave control of both chambers to the Democrats. Lawmakers from both political parties stated that their primary goal is to lower the cost of living for American citizens, while Democrats also plan to pursue oversight of the Trump administration. Democratic Representative-elect Scott Wiener, who will represent California's 11th Congressional District, stated that reducing living costs remains the most important task. Republican Representative-elect Chris Stigall of Missouri's 6th Congressional District noted that his party must learn how to better communicate with voters after losing seats. Adrian Boafo, a Democratic representative-elect for Maryland's 5th Congressional District, emphasized that his main focus will be supporting federal workers, noting that 85,000 federal workers live in his district and 30,000 have faced layoffs. Luke Bronin, a Democrat representing Connecticut's 1st Congressional District, argued that the party must tackle major problems like healthcare, housing, and electricity prices with bold solutions while also pursuing accountability for corruption. On the Republican side, Representative-elect Charlie Hatcher of Tennessee's 5th Congressional District highlighted the high cost of diesel fuel as a critical issue impacting farmers, transportation, and grocery prices. Representative-elect Chris McGowan of Iowa's 4th Congressional District acknowledged that Republicans are now in the minority and must collaborate with Democrats on shared issues. Representative-elect Jon Bonck of Texas' 38th Congressional District expressed a willingness to work across party lines on housing affordability, tax cuts, and deregulation. Meanwhile, the Congressional Progressive Caucus hosted an introductory press briefing with incoming members. Representative Greg Casar, the chair of the caucus, announced that the group is adding at least 25 new members in what he called the largest class of progressive lawmakers. Casar added that a larger majority will allow Democrats to pass major policies like Social Security expansion and billionaire taxes that smaller majorities could not push through in the past. Representative Pramila Jayapal, the chair emerita of the caucus, reiterated that the group's goals include fighting corruption, lowering costs, and ending foreign wars.

Context

Freshman orientation for newly elected members of the United States Congress is a traditional multi-day program designed to help incoming lawmakers set up their offices, hire staff, and learn the rules of the legislative chamber before they officially take office. Midterm elections in the United States occur midway through a presidential term and frequently alter the balance of power in Congress, which forces incoming lawmakers to adjust their legislative strategies based on which party holds the majority.
