Erika Kirk Slams Dave Chappelle Over Joke About Her Late Husband's Murder
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · Variety ·

The Incident
Comedian Dave Chappelle faced heavy criticism after joking about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a stand-up performance at Madison Square Garden. Footage from the Friday show, which required audience members to lock their phones in Yondr pouches, captured Chappelle telling the crowd that he feels better since Kirk was murdered.
The Response
Erika Kirk, the widow of the late activist, posted a sharp response on X on Sunday. She called it beyond disgusting to see commentators and comedians treat the destruction of a human life and political assassination as entertainment. She noted that political violence is something the country must never tolerate or celebrate, adding that her two children and she will live with her husband's death every day.
Podcast Apology
Jennifer Welch and Angie Sullivan, hosts of the "I've Had It" podcast, also faced criticism after laughing at a joke about Kirk during their Thursday show. The two released a joint statement on Saturday to apologize and state that they regret their actions.
Context
Political figures and public commentators often face intense scrutiny over public statements regarding high-profile acts of violence and political assassinations. Charlie Kirk was a well-known conservative activist and the co-founder of Turning Point USA who died at age 31 after being shot in Utah on September 10, 2025.
