Apprentice jockey Izzy Neale critical after race fall at Warren
Reported by Shreya Kapoor (Senior Writer) · SMH - Sport ·
Apprentice jockey Izzy Neale is in a critical condition in hospital following a bad fall during a race at Warren on Sunday. The 22-year-old was riding a six-year-old horse named Marnoo in the Cotton Cup over 1600 metres when the animal knuckled over on the home turn near the 400-metre mark. Neale fell heavily to the ground and was unconscious when an air ambulance flew her to Dubbo Hospital. The horse suffered a near foreleg injury and was put down. Another rider named Diego Montes de Oca was thrown from his horse, Shadow Dane, shortly after the first fall. He went to Dubbo Hospital by road ambulance with a suspected broken foot, and officials called off the rest of that day's race program. Racing NSW stated on Monday morning that Neale's family is by her side at the hospital. Neale comes from Merriwa and works as an apprentice to Scone trainer Scott Singleton. She started her race riding career in February 2024 and has already ridden 88 winners, including a Sydney win at Rosehill in July on a horse named It's A Tata, trained by Brett Robb.
Context
Horse racing is a high-speed sport where falls can lead to serious injuries for both riders and animals. Because safety is a major concern after such incidents, racing bodies often cancel upcoming meetings to allow the racing community time to process the shock and support affected families.
