How Delhi University's Hostel Gap Forces Students Into Private Market

The collapse of a private hostel in Delhi's Satya Niketan area has brought attention to the safety and living conditions of students in the national capital. The tragedy has claimed seven lives, highlighting the need for alternative accommodation options for students who do not get a place in a university or college hostel. Delhi University has 2,51,474 regular students, but its 20 university-level hostels provide only 3,500 seats, equivalent to 2.77% of the student population. This has led to a surge in the number of private hostels and rented accommodation in neighbourhoods surrounding Delhi University campuses. The Delhi High Court recently directed authorities to inspect private guesthouses and ensure they comply with building regulations. As a result, students are increasingly reliant on the private accommodation market, which is largely unregulated. The scale of the accommodation gap is stark, with only one institutional hostel seat available for every 36 students at Delhi University. This has forced many students to seek alternative accommodation options, often at a higher cost. The shortage of hostel facilities has also raised concerns about the quality of education and the overall student experience. The Delhi government has announced plans to increase hostel capacity, but the issue remains a pressing concern for students and policymakers alike.
