AI-Driven IPO Wave Set to Accompany Anthropic Listing
Reported by Neha Sharma (Staff Writer) · Livemint - Markets ·
The market for initial public offerings is on the move, with several companies in artificial intelligence and other sectors set to go public. Anthropic PBC is leading the charge, with its IPO expected to be one of the largest this year or next. The company is seeking to match or top the record-setting $86 billion-plus valuation of Elon Musk's SpaceX in June. Open AI is also expected to launch a massive listing, making it one of the biggest-ever IPOs. Despite headwinds in the market, including rising oil prices, war in the Middle East and Ukraine, and the potential for higher interest rates, investors are willing to take risks. Many companies are focusing on getting their numbers in order before making their IPO plans public. Lise Buyer, founder of Class V Group, a consultancy for companies going public, said that timing is always uncertain, and nobody is trying to time their IPOs around Anthropic. Companies like Nscale, Aggreko Plc, and Oura Health Oy are also making their way to the public markets. Ajay Shah, chair of technology investment banking at Deutsche Bank AG, believes there are interesting areas in AI that would pique investor interest, such as data center space, power cooling, and consumer health. However, some companies are waiting for the optimal conditions before making their move. Matt Kennedy, senior strategist at Renaissance Capital, says investors are willing to give companies the valuation they are seeking, even if it's based on earnings that won't show up for years in the future. Anthropic can justify its $2 trillion valuation by pointing to this trend, Kennedy said. Despite the hype, Kennedy doesn't predict a bubble, citing the willingness of investors to take risks. The quest for bigger and bigger IPOs is driven by the desire for investors to give companies the valuation they are seeking, even if it's based on long-term earnings. This trend is expected to continue, with several companies in AI and other sectors set to go public in the coming months.
