Dinesh Arya Secures Uncontested Rajya Sabha Seat for BJP in Uttarakhand

Dinesh Arya of the Bharatiya Janata Party was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand, officials said on Friday. The seat becomes vacant after incumbent Naresh Bansal’s term ends on November 25. Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha secretary Hem Pant confirmed that no other nomination was filed and handed Arya the election certificate at 3 pm today. Arya currently serves as vice‑chairperson of the State Drinking Water Monitoring Committee and previously led the BJP’s Nainital district unit. As a Dalit leader from Kumaon, his selection is being read as the party’s attempt to court Dalit voters ahead of the state assembly polls scheduled for February next year. He lodged his nomination papers on October 6. The BJP’s Uttarakhand core committee had examined around two dozen names at a meeting on September 25 before a smaller panel – comprising Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami, state party chief Mahendra Bhatt and state BJP general‑secretary (organisation) Phanindra Nath Sharma – narrowed the list and sent it to the central leadership for approval. The Congress party chose not to contest, citing insufficient numbers in the assembly; state Congress vice‑president Suryakant Dhasmana said, “We have 20 MLAs and are short of the required numbers. We cannot ensure the victory of our candidate, which is why we did not contest.”
Context
Rajya Sabha members are elected by state legislators, so parties need a minimum number of MLAs to win a seat. The BJP’s unopposed win reflects its numerical strength in the Uttarakhand assembly and its strategy to include Dalit representation before the upcoming elections.
