West Bank Settlements And Attacks Surge As Israel Approaches Elections

The Israeli government is increasing settlement expansion and movement restrictions in the West Bank as the country prepares for upcoming elections later this month. Data from the activist group Peace Now shows the region now houses over five lakh Israeli settlers, making up about five percent of Israel's total population, compared to fewer than 5,000 residents in 1967.
Expansion And Violence
Official planning processes have established more than 140 settlements, with nearly a quarter of 40,000 housing tenders put out since 2002 occurring in the past two years. Nearly 430 outposts, which are illegal even under domestic Israeli law, have appeared since the 1990s, with over half built in the last three years alone. Israel has also used land declarations to take over nine lakh dunams of private Palestinian land. The Israeli Parliament passed a resolution supporting sovereignty over the area, and officials recently published tenders for 1,234 homes in the E1 settlement project to link East Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich publicly called for a full-scale military campaign using tactics from Gaza, while major political groups show little interest in removing existing settlements.
Impact On Palestinians
Nearly three million Palestinians in the territory face severe movement curbs, including checkpoints, road gates, and barriers that block access to jobs, schools, hospitals, and farmland. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recorded over 1,600 settler attacks against Palestinians between January and August alone, following more than 1,200 annual incidents recorded each year since 2023. Over the past four years, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed and at least 10,000 injured. These assaults have damaged or destroyed over 6,000 properties and displaced thousands of people, reaching levels of displacement not seen since the occupation began nearly six decades ago.
International Backlash
Global bodies and foreign governments have sharply criticized these actions. Twelve nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and nine other European countries, issued a joint statement announcing new trade restrictions against illegal settlements. The United Nations human rights office has also expressed deep concern over the expansion plans and open calls for collective punishment from Israeli leaders.
Context
The West Bank is a landlocked territory near the Jordan River that has been under Israeli military occupation since the 1967 war. International law views settlements in this area as illegal, though the Israeli government disputes this legal status. This issue remains one of the core obstacles to any long-term peace agreement in the region.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Israel has steadily expanded settlements, outposts, and housing tenders in the West Bank while tightening movement restrictions on Palestinians, a process that has accelerated sharply since late 2023.
Why It Matters
This ongoing land seizure and the official push for sovereignty undermine the internationally backed two-state solution, displace thousands of families, and spark severe regional violence along with international trade sanctions against Israel.
What Happens Next
With elections approaching later this month, political dynamics within Israel will determine whether the government continues its hardline expansionist policies or faces mounting domestic and foreign pressure to alter its course.
