Smaller stocks continue to beat big companies in the Indian market this year even though they carry higher valuations, according to a recent quarterly report from Jefferies. Authored by Jefferies' Head of Equities Chris Wood, the Asia Maxima report notes that the Nifty MidCap 100 Index trades on 22.9 times its 12-month forward earnings, while the Nifty trades on 17 times.
Market Shifts
Because smaller stocks perform so well, the top 20 stocks in India now make up a much smaller share of the total stock market value. Their share dropped from 44 percent down to 27 percent since 2020. This trend runs opposite to the global pattern caused by passive investing, and it helps explain why major benchmark indices like the Nifty 50, Sensex, and Bank Nifty remain in the red for the year.
Economic Growth
Despite the pressure on key indices, Jefferies states that India's overall economic growth story stays strong. The economy is heading toward a real GDP growth of 6.5 to 7 percent this fiscal year, with nominal GDP growth expected around 11 to 12 percent. This economic strength comes alongside strong inflows into domestic mutual funds, which have averaged 388 billion rupees per month this year.
Context
Stock market benchmark indices often focus heavily on a small group of the largest companies, meaning a broad market rally in mid- and small-cap stocks can happen at the same time the main indices stay flat or drop. Financial analysts use metrics like price-to-earnings ratios and market capitalization shares to track how wealth distributes across different sizes of publicly traded companies over time.
