The Supreme Court has ordered fresh elections in 50 municipal wards across Patiala and Moga following a fact-finding commission's report that revealed widespread rules violations during the December 2024 local body polls. The court directed that the new polls be completed within six weeks, handing opposition parties a major political issue against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government with assembly elections approaching in less than five months.

Violations

The court-appointed commission discovered that rival candidates from the Congress, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal were forcibly stopped from filing nomination papers. Investigators also found instances of police detaining candidates, nomination papers being snatched and torn in the presence of police officers, intimidation of voters, and bogus voting in wards that the ruling party initially swept.

Affected Wards

The new polls affect 28 wards in the Patiala Municipal Corporation, all 15 wards of the Baghapurana Municipal Council, and 7 of the 13 wards in the Dharamkot Municipal Council in Moga district. In Patiala, out of 28 wards now heading back to the ballot box, 25 were previously won by the ruling party, two by the BJP, and one by the Congress. In Baghapurana and Dharamkot, opposition leaders had accused authorities of blocking their candidates entirely, leading to ruling party nominees being elected unopposed in all 22 wards across those two bodies.

Reactions

Opposition leaders have welcomed the verdict as a victory for democracy, while Patiala Mayor Kundan Gogia stated that his party is fully prepared for the fresh contest and will run on a platform of local development. Local candidates and district leaders from the BJP, Congress, and Akali Dal have begun organizing their campaign strategies and selecting candidates for the upcoming six-week deadline.

Context

Local body elections in India are managed by state election commissions and municipal bodies to choose local representatives for towns and cities. Legal challenges involving allegations of administrative misuse and voter suppression during municipal polls occasionally reach higher courts when political parties contest the fairness of the nomination and voting processes.

ExplainerWhy this matters

What Happened

The Supreme Court intervened in Punjab's local body elections after an independent fact-finding commission confirmed that opposition candidates were physically blocked from filing nomination papers and faced severe intimidation during the December 2024 polls.

Why It Matters

This ruling deals a significant blow to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party's democratic credentials just months before the state assembly elections. It provides opposition parties with documented judicial proof of administrative high-handedness, turning a local civic dispute into a major statewide political battleground.

What Happens Next

Political parties across Punjab are scrambling to finalise their candidates and campaign plans to contest the 50 affected wards within the strict six-week timeline set by the court, making these local votes an immediate test of political strength ahead of the 2027 assembly race.
