Mitchell Santner will captain a full-strength New Zealand side for the first three matches of their home ODI series against India, which starts on November 4 in Auckland. The wider all-format tour opens with five T20 matches beginning October 22 in Christchurch, acting as key preparation for the 2027 World Cup following New Zealand's historic 2-1 series win over India earlier this year. All-rounder Rachin Ravindra returns to the squad after recovering from a right shoulder dislocation he suffered last month when diving for a catch during a promotional shoot for Sky TV. Ravindra will play in the first three ODIs but is among eight players who will miss the final two games of the 50-over leg to prepare early for the two-match Test series starting November 19 in Wellington. Head coach Rob Walter stated in a team release that the home series is vital for playing in front of full stadiums against a formidable Indian team and serves as important World Cup preparation. New Zealand's squad for the first three ODIs includes Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, and Will Young. For the fourth and fifth ODIs in Mount Maunganui, Finn Allen, fast bowler Lochie Ferguson, Matt Fisher, Mitch Hay, Nick Kelly, Tim Seifert, and Kristian Clarke join the team alongside Santner, Bracewell, Chapman, Duffy, Tickner, and Young. Allen and Ferguson are seeking their first ODI caps since 2023, while Seifert last played against Pakistan 18 months ago. Meanwhile, Zak Foulkes, Will O'Rourke, and Ben Sears were unavailable for selection due to hip flexor, calf, and ankle injuries respectively.
Context
International cricket tours featuring multiple formats require careful squad rotation and workload management, especially when teams are preparing for upcoming world tournaments and crucial Test championship points. New Zealand's decision to split their ODI squad allows selectors to test team depth while giving red-ball specialists extra preparation time ahead of the Test matches against India.
