Threat And Location

Hurricane Simon has grown into a powerful Category 4 storm off the Pacific coast of Mexico. On Saturday morning, the storm sat about 115 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. The U.S. National Hurricane Center reports that Simon is moving northward and could get even stronger before hitting land late Saturday or early Sunday.

Warnings And Preparations

A hurricane warning covers parts of the Pacific coast south of Puerto Vallarta and includes Manzanillo, which is Mexico's largest Pacific port. Authorities also issued a tropical storm watch farther south toward Lazaro Cardenas. AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Pydynowski warned that the storm's rapid growth makes it very dangerous. Civil protection workers closed beaches, put up barriers, and raised red and black warning flags. Marines, soldiers, and emergency staff are patrolling flood-prone areas while evacuations have started in parts of Cihuatlan.

Rain And Storm Surge

The storm is set to dump 10 to 20 inches of rain across southwestern Mexico through Sunday, with isolated totals reaching 30 inches in parts of Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco. Heavy downpours could trigger life-threatening floods and mudslides in the mountains. A dangerous storm surge and large waves are expected along the coast near the landfall zone.

Context

Hurricanes in this region frequently threaten Mexico's western coastline during the Pacific storm season, often bringing severe wind and flood hazards from heavy rains. Storms of this magnitude require rapid safety measures by local authorities to protect residents in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas.
