Dhruv Rathee, the Germany‑based YouTuber, was released early Sunday, around 2 a.m.–3 a.m., after being held for about 18 hours following his detention on Saturday morning.

Detention and Release

He was seized from his home in Gurugram’s Sector 56 at roughly 9:30 a.m. on October 10, 2026, and kept under the watch of the Gurugram crime branch. Police handed him over to his family after the early‑morning release, confirming no charges have been filed against him. A senior officer said the decision came after talks with Delhi police and an assurance that Rathee would not join any crowd heading to Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders.

Security Clampdown

The arrest coincided with a massive security operation across the national capital aimed at stopping a CJP‑led protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged SIR irregularities. About 41,000 security personnel were deployed, and roughly 7,000 protesters – including four former chief ministers and CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das – were detained. The police warned Rathee could be re‑detained if he tries to reach Jantar Mantar.

Context

Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita, a person may be held for up to 24 hours before a magistrate’s appearance, unless special laws apply. The crackdown reflects heightened tensions as the Supreme Court schedules a special sitting to hear challenges to the prohibitory orders.
