The Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season began on Sunday across 18 venues in the country, but India's seasoned Test players had a rough start in their matches. India openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul were both out within the first hour of play in their respective games in Mumbai and Mulapadu. Playing for Mumbai against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium, Jaiswal got out for a duck off 13 balls. Rahul scored four runs against Andhra as last year's runners-up Karnataka lost four early wickets to fast bowlers Kavuri Saiteja and KV Sasikanth.

Player Backgrounds And Other Stars

Jaiswal was recently named in India's ODI squad against the West Indies but did not play in any of the three matches. The 24-year-old last played in the two-match Test tour of Sri Lanka, where he scored 77 runs across three innings. Before the Ranji season started, Jaiswal practiced wicket-keeping during a Mumbai practice game. Mumbai captain Siddhesh Lad told reporters on Thursday that Jaiswal aims to keep wickets for Mumbai or the Indian team in the future, though Lad noted he lacked official clarity on the matter. Meanwhile, Rahul played in India's 2-1 ODI series win against the West Indies. In his only innings during that series in Mullanpur, Rahul scored a fast-paced century off 82 balls, which was his ninth ODI ton. Along with Rahul and Jaiswal, other national stars like Mohammed Siraj, Manav Suthar, and Washington Sundar are also taking part in the tournament.

Match Cancellations And Legal Issues

While 18 matches played out in the opening round, the Plate group match between Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland was cancelled. An ongoing legal dispute inside the Arunachal cricket association left the team without a squad for the match in Ahmedabad. The association also failed to field a team in the Vinoo Mankad U-19 Trophy, which started in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. The BCCI informed opponents that the state unit might not field any team until the Itanagar Bench of the Guwahati High Court delivers a judgment on the factional dispute.

Context

The Ranji Trophy is India's premier domestic first-class cricket championship, serving as the main platform for players to prove their red-ball skills before national selection. Administrative disputes within regional cricket boards occasionally disrupt domestic fixtures, forcing tournament organizers to cancel matches when teams fail to form. Early season rounds often see national team players return to domestic action to regain form or find rhythm in traditional multi-day cricket.
