While a regular egg provides around 6 grams of protein and virtually no fibre, everyday plant-based foods can deliver higher amounts of both nutrients.

Plant Sources

Dt Ginni Kalra, Head Dietetics at Aakash Healthcare, notes that lentils, chickpeas and edamame are everyday kitchen staples rather than obscure superfoods. A cooked cup of lentils offers roughly 18 grams of protein along with 15 grams of fibre. Edamame, or immature soybeans, gives close to 17 grams of protein with around 8 grams of fibre per cooked cup. Chickpeas provide about 14 to 15 grams of protein and around 12 grams of fibre per cooked cup, while quinoa provides around 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fibre. Oats contain less protein than these options but can be paired with seeds for a more substantial breakfast.

Health Effects

Eggs provide complete protein with all essential amino acids, whereas most plant sources may benefit from being paired with grains or seeds to improve their amino acid profile. Kalra recommends thinking of plant foods as additions or alternatives rather than one-for-one nutritional replacements. For people managing weight or blood sugar, lentils and chickpeas are particularly useful because their fibre content helps contribute to satiety and slower absorption of carbohydrates. People with kidney disease or early kidney concerns should discuss their individual protein requirements with a healthcare professional before increasing their intake.

Context

Dietary fibre and protein both play key roles in keeping meals filling and supporting overall health, though balanced intake remains important. Many everyday kitchen staples naturally combine these nutrients without requiring major diet changes.
