UPDATE - follow-up to Starlink row: Musk shares reports on Reliance-linked firm's BJP campaign role, political donations: Elon Musk shared screenshots of media reports on social media alleging that a Reliance-funded firm boosted BJP campaigns and that a Reliance-linked company made large political donations. The posts featured an Al Jazeera report from 2022 about a Reliance-funded firm boosting BJP campaigns on Facebook and an archived Indian Express report from 2024 about Qwik Supply donating ₹385 crore to the BJP and ₹25 crore to the Shiv Sena through electoral bonds. The social media posts follow Mr. Musk's strong criticism of Mukesh Ambani regarding a delay in launching Starlink satellite broadband services in India.

Reactions and Official Stance

Mr. Musk addressed Mr. Ambani as "Prime Minister Ambani" on X, accusing him of protecting a monopoly and asking if he would let Starlink compete. He stated that Starlink is licensed in over 165 countries and has spent five years following Indian laws. Reliance has not publicly responded to the allegations. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that India does not permit monopolies and that the telecom authorization framework is fair and non-discriminatory, adding that three players have received satcom licences including Starlink, Jio Satcom, and Eutelsat OneWeb.

Context

Satellite communication licensing and spectrum pricing regimes involve complex regulatory approvals from bodies like TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications. Major global tech firms and domestic telecom giants often compete fiercely for market access in India's expanding digital economy.
