A five-year-old girl was found dead in the basement of an upscale housing society in Secunderabad on Saturday, hours after she went missing while playing. Around 6.30 pm, the victim had gone down to the clubhouse basement where she regularly rode her cycle, telling her older brother she would return in 10 minutes. When she failed to come back by 7 pm, her family began searching for the area. At 7.45 pm, the child's grandfather received a ransom call demanding 20 lakh rupees from an unknown number. The family informed the police at 9 pm, and officers checking CCTV footage discovered a man following the child. Police identified the suspect as a former security guard who had worked at the villa-only society for two years. Although he had been fired, he stayed in touch with other guards and used one of their SIM cards to make the ransom demand. Investigators traced his phone to the Secunderabad Railway Station before it was switched off, prompting a massive search using 10 special teams and drone cameras during the night. Authorities have completed the post-mortem examination and handed the body over to the family. Vaginal swabs were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory as sexual assault has not been ruled out, and a case for kidnapping and murder has been registered.

Context

Gated communities often rely on private security guards and internal CCTV networks, making the involvement of a former employee a critical security challenge for investigators. Child safety in residential basements and common areas remains a major concern for urban housing societies across Indian cities.
