The Legal Action
Nearly one hundred passengers from a troubled Flydubai flight are preparing a major legal case against the airline and the transport ministries of the United Arab Emirates and Israel. Around 100 people out of the 174 total passengers onboard have signed up for this effort and have formed a special passenger committee.
The Incident
This comes after a terrifying midair cockpit fight last month on a flight running between Dubai and Tel Aviv. The Omani co-pilot, named Hammam al-Hammami, stabbed the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, during the trip. Another passenger, Tzvika Manes, helped stop the attacker and now leads the passenger committee managing the case.
Compensation And Motive
Reports indicate that passengers could win between $200,000 and $250,000 each in compensation for the ordeal. UAE prosecutors state that the co-pilot wanted to seize the FZ1073 plane and crash it into an airport terminal in a suicide mission inspired by the September 11 attacks.
Context
Commercial aviation relies heavily on strict cockpit security rules and crew coordination to manage sudden onboard emergencies. Investigations into how such a security breach happened often involve looking closely at both airline screening procedures and government transport oversight.
