Record‑breaking heavy rain events in 2024 signal a possible new climate norm, a study says.
Unusual Rains
The research found the year saw the highest number of extreme rainfall incidents on record worldwide. Unlike past strong El Niño years, 2024 also experienced simultaneous warming of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, which together with a hotter atmosphere drove the floods and extended them into the summer months. Climate models indicate that the current pattern, still rare, could become typical by 2050 if warming continues at present rates.
Hypertension and Joint Damage
Doctors have long observed that people with high blood pressure often suffer worse osteoarthritis. New work shows that hypertension raises the level of the hormone vasopressin in the bloodstream. As people age, cartilage cells begin to produce receptors for vasopressin; when the hormone binds these receptors, cartilage breaks down faster, worsening joint damage. The investigators also demonstrated that drugs that block vasopressin receptors can stop this accelerated breakdown.
AI Math Breakthrough
Researchers unveiled an artificial‑intelligence system called AlphaProof Nexus that pairs large language models with Lean, a strict proof‑checking program. The combination lets the AI verify each logical step, avoiding the hallucinations that have limited earlier attempts. AlphaProof Nexus solved nine open problems posed by Paul Erdős, including two that had remained unsolved for 56 years, proved 44 conjectures and advanced optimisation theory.
Context
These findings show how climate trends, biomedical research and AI advances can each reshape their fields within a single year, highlighting the accelerating pace of scientific discovery.
