British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on Monday that a recent threat against a military facility in Britain was likely organized in Iran and directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The facility, located in Fairford, previously hosted American bombers used for military operations against Iran before U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the aircraft removed following security concerns last week. American officials reported to media outlets that the suspected scheme involved planning a drone strike. Mr. Burnham shared these findings during a parliamentary session, noting that authorities will target criminal networks and apply new sanctions against foreign actors. The investigation began after law enforcement detained five British men near the perimeter in late September on suspicion of explosive-related offenses. Police recovered petrol from their vehicles but no functional explosives, and all five suspects were released on strict bail conditions while detectives examined potential foreign state backing. Two additional individuals, including one British-Iranian citizen, were also detained and later freed. Meanwhile, Iranian officials denied any connection to the event, dismissing the accusations as false and malicious. British security services have previously blamed the foreign government for directing various plots within the country and recently banned support for the military branch under new state-proxy legislation.

Context

International tensions often lead to heightened security measures around foreign and domestic military installations when foreign states are suspected of involvement in local security breaches. Governments frequently rely on counter-terrorism laws and diplomatic sanctions to respond to alleged hostile activities directed from abroad.
