A recent medical emergency highlights a condition known as steakhouse syndrome, where unchewed food gets lodged in the oesophagus and causes a sudden blockage. Dr Saurabh Dixit, a senior consultant in laparoscopic, robotic, and laser surgery, shared details of a patient who arrived at around 11:30 with severe chest pain and an inability to swallow following an iftar meal. After visiting a nearby medical college where the condition was misdiagnosed and failing to secure a bed at a large hospital, the patient reached Dr Dixit's facility for an emergency endoscopy under sedation.

Medical Findings

The emergency procedure revealed two obstructing foreign bodies stuck in the mid-oesophagus: a thick bolus of unchewed chicken along with a chicken bone. Dr Dixit noted that if such a blockage stays impacted for too long, patients can develop aspiration pneumonitis and face risks of oesophageal perforation during the removal process. Dr Adithya V. Naragund, senior consultant in GI and HPB Surgery at Cytecare Hospitals in Bengaluru, added that early warning signs include a sudden feeling of food stuck in the chest or throat, drooling, chest discomfort, and an inability to swallow saliva or even liquids.

Context

Food impaction is treated as a medical emergency because prolonged obstruction can cause severe tissue damage, tears, or perforation requiring prompt intervention. Specialists recommend chewing food thoroughly, eating slowly, avoiding large bites of dense meat, and staying hydrated during meals to prevent such emergencies.
