Alphabet Inc.'s Google has introduced the Fitbit Edge, a $180 premium fitness tracker that combines features of a screenless tracker and a smartwatch. Positioned between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5, the device includes an OLED display, built-in maps, notifications, music controls, and weather updates. ## Features and Battery The Edge automatically tracks up to 100 activities, supports over 50 exercise modes, and offers real-time workout prompts. Google states the device's GPS is 40 per cent more accurate, and sleep-stage detection is 15 per cent more accurate than on earlier generations. The battery lasts up to seven days on a single charge, and the wearable is water-resistant up to 50 meters.

Subscriptions and Market

Google aims to expand its high-margin health services through Google Health Premium, which gives users access to Google Health Coach powered by Gemini AI. Users get the first three months of the $10 per month subscription for free. The company's long-term plan is to use consumer health data to improve the AI coach and lock users into the Google ecosystem. The Fitbit Edge is available for preorder through the Google Store, with retail sales starting on October 27.

Context

The global wearables market is currently dominated by Apple Inc.'s Apple Watch and Whoop. However, consumer demand is shifting toward minimalist, discreet wearables that provide detailed health insights without the bulk of a traditional smartwatch.
